Wheelchair Seating Evaluations
An individualized evaluation connects seating and mobility needs with the person’s daily activities and environment.
Start with function and daily use.
A wheelchair is part of the person’s everyday life. Discuss the activities they need to complete, the assistance they receive, and the environments in which the equipment must work.
An evaluation may consider posture, positioning, mobility, pressure management, equipment use, and the practical demands of the home. The evaluating clinician determines the appropriate assessment and recommendations for the individual.
Questions to bring to the evaluation.
- What is difficult with the current equipment, and when does the difficulty occur?
- Which rooms, entrances, and transportation arrangements need to be considered?
- Who assists with mobility and which caregivers need equipment training?
- What records, orders, measurements, or existing equipment information does the clinician need?
- Who handles ordering, authorization, delivery, fitting, repairs, and follow-up?
Recommendations, payment approval, and equipment delivery are separate steps. Confirm the status of each before making a purchase or changing the home.
Coordinate seating with access.
Doorways, bathrooms, steps, and circulation space may affect equipment use. A home modification evaluation can address accessibility questions when appropriate. Occupational therapy and physical therapy may address other functional goals identified by the treating team.
Discuss a referral.
Call 248.599.2410 with the patient’s location, current equipment concerns, and the requested evaluation. Ask about referral requirements and the approved way to provide records. Availability, clinical appropriateness, and payment arrangements are confirmed individually.
Do not independently change seating components or transfer methods. New discomfort, skin concerns, or a change in function should be reported to the appropriate clinician.
Let’s talk about the care that’s needed.
